Harnessing and Inducing Hypnagogic Trips

Hypnogogia is the mild hallucinatory state that we all experience whilst drifting off to sleep, although some naturally get it more intensely than others. It is the halfway state between waking life and sleep where small scenarios and dreams begin to play out as you drift off to sleep and shouldn’t be confused with its opposite which is the very similar dreams and subtle hallucinations experienced while drifting from sleep to wakefulness and known as Hypnapompia. Those short vivid dreams you keep getting when you repeatedly hit the snooze button on your alarm in the morning? That right there is called Hypnapompia.

It’s quite possible to harness these little dream like states and turn them into full blown realistic hallucinations that you can experience in bed before getting a good night’s rest in a fairly simple way. Literally all you have to do is try to block out external thought and quieten your mind until you are both conscious but so empty that your brain begins to fill in the lack of input with hallucinations that are identical to the short breakthrough scenarios experienced on substances such as DPH and Datura but without the god awful side effects. The most efficient way to do this is to simply get into a comfortable position that you can sleep in, resist absolutely all urge to move your body and block out your thoughts by concentrating on the act of breathing. Concentrate on the rhythm of your breathing and nothing else, it’s difficult at first as you end up going through cycles, you’ll block out all thought and think “Awesome! I’ve done it and I’m tripping balls!” but then you are immediately sent back to the beginning of the process all over again, with each attempt at letting go however it does become a little easier and your ability to jump right back in there can start to quicken after a few attempts on your first night trying.

This does require some practise but is still an easy thing to do and although it’s helped massively by falling asleep on the comedown of ANY drug it can still be done and practised while simply falling asleep sober (although with much more difficulty at first) and if you keep practising this skill as you drift off to sleep at night you will quickly begin to unlock huge amounts of previously unexplored territory in your mind.

An interesting thing about this simple version of sleep-drug meditation is that although the hallucinations are all generally equally realistic but at the same time dream like across substances, each one has a different style of hallucination. Experimenting with induced Hypnagogia after a long day of tripping or buzzing is a completely different experience from trying it sober or high despite still being similar in many ways.

After a hard nights buzzing on MDMA I can generally without even trying hard induce incredibly rich and detailed “social hallucinations” which usually consist of full blown everyday conversations with the people I was buzzing with a few hours earlier. They can however get very strange and are not limited to everyday things.

This method of inducing Hypnogogia even gives Deliriants a genuine application for Psychonauts as although 700mg will give you intensely realistic hallucinations whilst awake. You will feel like death the entire time and the hallucinations will almost always be negative because of the impossible to ignore bad vibes. 150mg however will leave you simply feeling drowsy with an ability to induce some intense Hypnogogic hallucinations as you go to bed, they are very detailed and indepth but much harder to remember and grab hold of even mere seconds after they happen when compared to doing this on other substances. This memory loss however is an unavoidable characteristic of deliriants.
For this purpose I would not recommend exceeding 150mg as it’s generally at 200mg of DPH that the negative side effects begin to kick in.

Trying this shit whilst falling asleep after a long day of tripping on LSD is an awesome experience. Even if you feel that the LSD has essentially completely gone from your system as you drift off to sleep the small amounts within you give the Hypnogogic Hallucinations complete free reign and make them very easy to remember. Once you push past the rapid fire thoughts and clear your mind from thought you will find yourself in hallucinations that can sometimes stay even after you realize that you are in a hallucination and begin to think again.

I can’t stress enough how realistic these scenarios that you are placed into are once you reach them, studies show that the experience of dreaming activates the same parts of the brain that a genuine experience does. This essentially means that that the scenarios are completely indistinguishable from reality usually right up until the moment that they are over and you realize “well that obviously didn’t happen!”.

The hallucinations can be essentially anything and once a little practised you can go through many of them in the short amount of time between getting into bed and actually falling asleep but to give you an example of the sort of scenarios that have played out for me and others who have been practising this here are a few random but notable hallucinations:

  • Being surrounded by normal people in an alleyway and conversing with them for minutes about who knows what.
  • Walking around a corner only to have two buses drive past either side of you at a very high speed.
  • Seeing a portrait LCD screen on my wall with an old man’s face displayed on it, staring down at me.
  • Playing perfectly normal Badminton (we’ve never played Badminton before in our lives) apart from the shuttlecock being a mass of visuals that flies into your face before snapping you out of the scenario.
  • Watching a perfectly comprehensible perfume advert only for it to zoom out and become one of those adverts at the beginning of youtube videos.
  • Thinking that you are walking on hard ground, only to be snapped out of it once you try to put your foot down and realize you’re lying in a bed.
  • Seeing a giant eye watching you from a massive screen in front of your face.
  • Thinking that you are able to look around your room or hear what is happening in it with your eyes closed, only to realize that the room is laid out completely differently once you snap out of it and check for accuracy (this has happened multiple times for me and to other people).

If this specific type of trip was a drug I do not know how I’d categorize it, it seems to be short delirious states that are induced for dissociative reasons (cutting yourself off from your senses).
It’s worth noting that me and my friends have literally been practising this for just a couple of weeks and not on a nightly basis. In the short amount of time I’ve been doing this I have so far improved up to the point where the scenarios are starting to last increasingly long amounts of time and I can’t imagine how easy this will eventually get in the months, years and decades to come.
This stuff requires concentration but is pretty easy once you start and is especially easy if you are falling asleep high, tripping, buzzing or whatever.

Personally, I cannot be bothered with the bullshit and effort of meditation, which relies on some similar principles anyway (minus the drugs and bed) but requires a lot of practise and time. This is something that works quickly as you are assisted by drugs and the fact that you are beginning to dream anyway and does not require much practise, hell it’s not like you’re busy when you’re falling asleep so you might as well do something constructive with that time.

If this works for you, I’d love to hear about the scenarios you’ve experienced so send me a message.
